Well both links bring up the same article as it was on the front page of the Times. The link I posted also has another article worth reading; "A Ships Trail of Crime, Part 1".

SVNeko, its all about the fact its a jungle out there and there are essentially no laws and no authority is interested in doing anything outside of their jurisdiction.

Very hard to say what is actually occurring here. It could be supposed "pirates" being executed (illegally) or, more likely for my money, the murder of slave workers lately aboard one of the fishing vessels in question, but thrown overboard to be killed for some infraction. I suspect an internal dispute within the vessels, but the fact that it was casually recorded and celebrated does speak to the idea that such violence for these men must be pretty commonplace. In SE Asia there is a serious problem with slave labour and abuse and violence aboard fishing vessels, with rumours of murder aboard not uncommon. Unfortunately there is not a lot to go on here. I found the video utterly compelling and horrific, and the article informative but frustrating as the author appears not to be a seafarer and the investigation and discussion rather general and vague. Certainly I have been STERNLY warned off any trajectory towards Taiwanese/Chinese fishing vessels in random areas of the Pacific in the past, and try to steer clear of fishing vessels in general. Whether such incidents represent a clear threat to cruising sailors is much harder to say still… though I have to say I have encountered precious little evidence of it outside the one random and sad incident of the death of Malcolm Robertson by desperate Burmese escaped slave fishermen.

Horrific. Webb Chiles has written a very sad story that includes a similar incident called Shadows. Must say meeting a crew such as this mid ocean is a personal nightmare. I hope the threat of modern coms might make a rogue fishing vessel pause, but it would be very hard to positively identify your typical rusty fishing vessel. I have been aboard a NZ managed ex Japanese tuna boat. Absolutely terrible living conditions for the foreign crew. A tough life, but the crew where a freindly lot.

Our news only shows us the scary stuff. Cos it sells more news!
For the most part, humanity is wonderful and caring. But that doesnt sell add spots for Toyota and Mcdonalds during the add breaks.

What is the point here? I had not seen it. Clearly it would appear the OP and SaltyMonkey and others had not seen it. The case is not solved. It is relevant to the concerns of many here. Just because a certain (likely small) proportion of people managed to catch it "making the rounds" on some video nasty site means no one else may now (after a WHOLE two years or so!) discuss this shocking and as yet still open case of extraordinary brutality at sea?

I hadn't realised the criteria for silence had become so lean these days.
