Moving to Chennai India...

My wife and I are planning on moving to Chennai from San Francisco for three years or so. Any suggestions on where is best, or even where its possible, to keep our boat (Passport 42)?

I'm thinking India, but something like Thailand or Malaysia. Would I be able to leave the boat there for that long? Are some places better for this than others? I've never even been to East Asia (other than the last two months in Chennai) let along cruised there.

Any advice would greatly appreciated.

I have not been to chennai in a few years it was a regular port of call when I was a captain with Maersk line as of 2011 they had no marina the port its self is filthy they have open dumps of coal which blows every where and is very corrosive to your boat and turns everything black the harbor is 20 min from the downtown area I don't know what you plan on doing there but I would leave my boat at home chennai This is a very dirty place most of the processing plants for leather that goes to Italy for shoes its an industrial town and traffic is horrible the people are nice but this is not a place to take your boat leave it in Thailand or Sri Lanka they has a nice marina msg me if you want to know more I was on that run from Singapore to Chennai for quite a few years I was there Christmas morning when the tsunami hit Chennai if you look at the buildings in the port they painted marks to where the water level was.

Yes, I agree. I would never bring the boat to India. I was asking for ideas about Thailand or Malaysia, but Sri Lanka would be nice too as its much closer. How is the cruising there vs the Thailand area?

I'll also PM you. Thanks!!

Whoops, I meant to say:

I'm thinking NOT India, but something like Thailand or Malaysia.

Re: Moving to Chennai India...

If you don't keep your boat near to where you live, I suggest a different approach:

1)Check flights to various destinations in SE Asia for availability and cost
2)Pick your area once you found the most favourable flight availability
3)check on noonsite what info you find about that particular area
4)cruise there for a while, don't forget, you can always move on to an other area

Thailand, Malaysia, Or the Philippines, all great places with pros and cons
