No moorings in Louisiana?? Why would ya want a mooring when ya can anchor anywhere ya can find enought water !! LOL and besides ya can get a private dock for a hundred bucks a month!! water costs 10 to 12 dollars a mo and electric is as much as U use!! our boat at 42 ft fully air conditioned, cost 76 bucks a Month at the hotest time of the year !! anyway with the food and entertainment we have for almost free its worth the dark water !! LOL and Mexico is Close and theres always New Orleans !! when ya want to Party !! just sayin it an't so bad down the Bayou !!

In Atlantic Highlands NJ they charge $2400.00 per mooring per season (May-October) winter dry storage is another $1200-1400 depending on the size of your boat. If you want prime space to store your dinghy during the summer months add another $200. The real kicker is the town only pays the state of NJ $60.00 for each mooring.

Same here (Nantucket). My mooring permit is for a boat up to 25', and it runs $150 for a 6 month season. I'm on a 10 year waiting list to upgrade to a larger boat. I have to pay to have the mooring hauled and maintained every year, and inspected every 3 years in order to renew. I inquired with the local mooring co. to see how much to rent a mooring for a 34' boat, and was told $4,000 for the same 6 month season.

Various reasons.

1. Some ports are filled with moorings leaving no room to anchor.

2. Some ports the available anchoring spots are less desirable: more exposed, further from the dock/beach/town, poor holding, high currents, etc.

3. In some areas with poor holding a mooring might be more secure.

4. Convenience for some who for whatever reason don't or can't anchor.

When I read these threads, it makes me wonder if I missed the opportunity to really enjoy cruising. The freedom seems to be fading and the opportunities shrinking.

Decency and fellowship replaced by greedy immoral developers.
