Re: Maldives president overthrown

Too bad. He was the first democratically elected president there,....ever.

Isn't the Maldives where a couple flew there to get married on a tropical island beach, and the muslim officiating the wedding, instead of reciting the agreed wedding vows in arabic, chanted arabic swear words, betting they wouldn't understand enough to notice?

Isn't that also where an isolated native tribe, (the guys who actually owned the island first), are being exploited?

Also isn't this president the same guy who wrote you must be an adherant to islam to be a citizen in the islands constitution?

And wasn't he also a UN plant, who crashed the Maldives economy pursuing the "green" economy?

I feel bad for the Maldive people for the unrest, but it is really hard to tell who is the good guys here.

I was hoping to visit there someday, now I'm thinking of maybe giving it a pass for a while.

Re: Maldives president overthrown

I just want to remind everyone that the topic of our forums is cruising and that politics are only permitted in that context. Maldives is a destination and this discussion will remain open only if the discussion centres around cruising.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Their "Parliament" held a session in scuba gear 30 feet under water to emphasize that point! I think the highest point of land is something like 22 feet above sea level.

I've been waiting for the seas to rise since they stopped telling me they were going to fall with the coming ice age. Still waiting and virtually unmeasurable rise in sea level. But then temperatures have been constant to declining since before the end of the last century.

Every year here in Australia the spring tides wash away parts of Stradbroke Island on the Amity side it's been going on since time began. Yet every year it's shown to scare the chicken littles that the sea is rising, the sea is rising!!!!!!!!!

Re: Maldives president overthrown

Sea level is definitely, irrefutably rising. You cannot argue that, no matter what logic you use. In about 3 hours, it will go back down. I promise.

Re: Maldives president overthrown

They build resorts overhanging the water on a coral cay and get some weather washing areas of sand away and complain about global warming and sea level rising.

Its simply what coral cays do.

Similarly, put buildings on frontal sand dumes. Can't really complain when dunes wash out in storms. It is what they do and why should not build rigid structures on frontal dunes.

Re Maldives whose economy relies heavily on tourism. Switch off tourists and the economy will crash so i doubt will be much of an issue.
