Is state reg required for a USCG Documented vessel while offshore?

Hello!
We are leaving the states soon and we're trying to determine whether or not we'll need to renew our Washington State vessel registration if we are no longer operating the boat in Washington. We have our USCG Documentation, US Passports, and all other docs, but would like to avoid paying the $1000 to renew state registration if we no longer need it. Anyone know?
Thanks
Sue

They go by the purchase price of the boat as to the cost of the sticker. Mine are less then $100.

Another good reason to restore an old boat.

Thanks! Yes, we were a bit shocked too since it's our first time renewing this boat. Our older Cal was cheap!! So, once we leave the states, no state registration required, right? That's good news!

BUT! If your in a US harbor for more then 60 days (for most places) you'll be required to buy a visitor reg./pass.

Some states tax anything you buy, pro-rating its age. In KS and WV, it is not a good idea to buy anything new, as whatever you buy is taxed to death until it reaches 7-10 years of age. The tax is a percentage on the purchased price. Mauritz

Think of it this way, the state's jurisdiction for taxing things ends at its borders. If your boat isn't in the state they have no claim on it for taxing purposes.

The rules are highly variable in different states as to how long you can spend in their waters without needing to get a state registration in the new state. Many give you 90 days, some give only 30 or 60, and some say you should register your boat where you spend the most time within the year. Florida requires all visiting documented boats to also be state registered, with no grace period.

In California, the annual registration renewal fee is $20.

The kicker is that most boats are subject to annual property taxes at the same rates as local property taxes (about 1.5% of a boat's value). Boats are also subject to sales and use taxes.

Re: Is state reg required for a USCG Documented vessel while offshore?

We are from Oregon and left in 2004. We kept the boat registered knowing we were going to end up in Florida. Big difference from Washington as we pay $100 for 2 years. Some sailing firiends we met in Mexico were paying Washington $1,000 a year and let it lapse. They were going to be out several years so the savings was substantial. Do have to mention that we've been in Florida for two years and no one has asked about our state registration. Of course, it was also the easiest entry we've ever experienced. Mexico and Central America only want your documentation. Have a grand adventure.
