If a crew member throws something in the water while racing...

say for example 1/2 of an uneaten sandwich or an apple core. Technically that would be a violation of the USCG 3 mile law. Would it also violate ISAF racing rules and if so which one and what would be the penalty?

Hard to reason why it would be. It's fish food.

Don't know about the racing committee ... but with the right officer, it might be 6 months in jail ...

... unless you're in southern Florida ... then it might be 6 months in jail, plus jail time for all the trumped up stuff ...

Re: If a crew member throws something in the water while racing...

Throwing trash overboard is specifically prohibited by the RRS Rule 55. It's a bright line rule, that also outlawed using rubber bands or wool ties to launch spinnakers. I am not sure if it has been held that it also prohibits throwing trash overboard, even if doing so is in compliance with the law.

So tossing a sandwich overboard in the middle of the Pacific may be a violation, but I am not sure. Inside three miles it absolutely would be.

Re: If a crew member throws something in the water while racing...

it certainly would not be a violation in international waters to throw a sandwich overboard.

Closer to home there is actually quite a large amount of things that can be thrown overboard within territorial waters.

It is garbage, read your MARPOL sticker. (You do have one, near the oil discharge sticker, right?)

I don't recall the letter of the ISAF rules but generally you have to have all "equipment" and crew that you started with. And, even if the boat becalmed next to you asks for a beer, you're not allowed to throw one over. So depending on how strict the RC wants to be...keep it on the boat to be sure. The guy on the next boat just might be Dennis Conner, and he's not the only one who knows how to use the rulebook as a weapon.

Your crew threw out lunch, now your boat is 8oz. lighter. Still sound like something a racer wouldn't care about?

Re: If a crew member throws something in the water while racing...

It's a sandwich. OK it might violate a racing rule but unless you also through the plastic wrapper it's biodegradable, it's fish food.

So don't toss it in the water in front of the local yacht club but otherwise in the water is the best place for it.

Re: If a crew member throws something in the water while racing...

So... if a crew member slips on a banana peel while on board and the banana peel goes overboard... and the crew member is impaled by a narwhal before they can be rescued, is it a crime to not get this on video?

Irrelevant to the OP's question

He just asked if it violated a Racing Rule, not whether it was ecologically harmful or otherwise illegal.

The answer is: Yes it does.

Re: If a crew member throws something in the water while racing...

Would it matter if you throw the half-sandwich overboard before ... or after eating it(like ... throw up)?
