Help please. Application for vessel identification number

We are a married couple US citizen and British citizen.

Can both be listed as owners on the federal documentation?

(A previous post suggested that only US citizens can register a boat in the US)

Where would we find specific details on this?

THANK YOU in advance for any help.

Re: Help please. Application for vessel identification number

You must be a US citizen. Or not.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR DOCUMENTATION?

The basic requirements for documentation are to demonstrate ownership of the vessel, U.S. citizenship, and eligibility for the endorsement sought.

About half way down this page -

USCG National Vessel Documentation Center, Fee Page

But further down the page there is this -

HOW DO I ESTABLISH U.S. CITIZENSHIP?

Citizenship is established by completion of form CG-1258. In addition to individuals, corporations, partnerships, and other entities capable of holding legal title may be deemed citizens for documentation purposes. Corporations must be registered in a state or the U.S; the chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors must be U.S. citizens, and no more than a minority of the number of directors necessary to constitute a quorum may be non-citizens. In addition, at least 75% of the stock must be vested in U.S. citizens for a coastwise or fisheries endorsement.

So there may be a way to do it...

Relative to individuals -- i.e., not corporations, etc. -- only US citizens can Federally document a vessel. Note the word document is different from registration, which is usually the word individual States use for related ownership and/or taxation paperwork. (I think -- but am not sure -- anyone can register a boat, at least in most States.)

The NVDC link will get you to all the info, but FWIW, the guys out there work nicely over the phone, too -- for those instances where differences between American English and British English might seem to make things as clear as mud.

At least one other US/Brit couple on here has gone through the process; search user robin3 (I think).

You can register your boat in the state where the boat is located. Documentation is different as it is U.S. Coast Guard and a federal process. Unless you are leaving the US for ports beyond the Bahamas, there is no need for documentation.
