While you are avoiding (not evading) taxes over there, could you please pay for the new bridge you need to earn a living here? :-)

(So I'm told, not quite adventurous enough to visit a place where residents can discuss for hours how to make Styrofoam seats for their honey buckets)

Me I like the old bridge especially at rush hour. Nothing like a bridge lift at 4:30 to bring a sailor the accolades he deserves.

Seriously I work in five states. That bridge is just fine with me

Besides it is your side of the river that wants, a dedicated bike path, light rail and a mule train lane built into the new bridge. I will be cruising full time when the first shovel full of dirt is turned.

If a boat is Federally Documented, it must have a name and hailing port displayed. If it is state registered, there is no obligation to have either. Instead, the state registration numbers must be displayed on the bow.

I need to research this Florida tax thing. I was told that if you stay in Florida for over 90 days that depending on when you bought the boat and whether you intended to bring it to Florida that they sock you with a pretty hefty tax. Putting a Florida hailing port on the stern and having it on the documentaion certificate would probably indicate that I intended to bring it to Florida. Maybe someone here has experience with this and can clarify it. I'd like to use a Florida hailing port but have already paid taxes in NC and don't feel the need to pay again in Florida.

doesn5t matter what ye choose for a hailing ort as long as usps is able to deliver mail there..mine says santa barbara, ca...isplenty of room and looked good when i got it--now is a tad rough with letters missing-- i guess i need to address that minor problem eventually.....sticky letters were used over teak wood without benefit f coating the teak with a protectant..LOL
btw--hailing port has nothing to do with fees or taxes..is just a place boat calls home. taxes are paid according to your physical whereabouts.
hailing port has nothing to do with intention to relocate.

The obsession with taxes is because if you were out here in the Pacific Northwest with a hailing port of Portland, Oregon and were berthed in Seattle you would be hassled by Washington state incessantly.

Someone stated earlier that hailing port and the state it's registered in doesn't matter, but I guess there's some common notion that somehow it does...

And taxes can be an issue with the state it's registered in. Owned or not. Recently I was given a truck by my parents and went to transfer the title. The current title on the truck was from Alaska and I was getting it titled and registered in Washington.

I was told that since no one had ever paid sales tax on it (assumed it was purchased in Alaska with no state sales tax), I owed them 9% of whatever the decided the value of it was. I'm assuming they would try the same stunt if the title was already in my name from Alaska, but that might have been a different situation.

Anyways, the truck was actually originally purchased in Arizona, and my parents had the invoice / receipt with a line item for sales tax. Apparently it didn't matter that it was only about 1/2% (opposed to 9%), as long it was paid....

I guess the moral of the story is that just because you already own something don't just assume that someone might up and decide you owe some tax on it when it's title / registration moves to a new state. But if the hailing port doesn't have to match, I guess that wouldn't matter.

And there's a Hope, AK also. I beleive it is on the Turnagain Arm, but due to tides there I would highly suggest not cruising in the immediate area.

where did you read about the 4" letter height requirement? I don't ever recall that. I thought it just needed to be legible.
