Don't make this about government conspiracies, especially with no facts.

Asset Forfeiture, is commonly used when the accused is making money from his crime, which includes the transportation he used to commit that crime.

Although the article didn't mention it, someone had to get arrested to make this happen...

So once again I say there is more to this than what is in the article and I look forward to hearing about it...

But I'll never get up in arms over the laws applying.
33 boxes, that's a lot of cigars. at 25 cigars a box. 775 undeclared, and counterfeit cigars.

Maybe he (or she) is a very heavy smoker.

Anytime you have to prove your innocence there is a big problem. Asset seizure without proof often occurs.
Who cares? As long as I have 200 channels with nothing on that I can watch for 5 hours a day then I am good. :thumb

Lol. We're talking about a good locker or two of the stuff.

I used to love American spirits rolling tobacco before I quit. They stopped importing it, I bought out every stock in town.
Still wouldn't bring 200 pouches back with me across the border. I like keeping my motorbike too much

Those boxes of fake Cubans are all over Mexico too. I buy some occasionally. They're boxes of 5.

The whole process is funny. They as if I'd like to buy some Cuban cigars and I say they're about as Cuban as me but I'd like to buy some Mexican cigars. They start out at $50.00! I've talked them down to 100 pesos, about $7.50.
If they insist that they're Cuban, I ask if an old man brought them on a donkey.

Re: Have a cigar? Be careful!

Hard to believe someone is going to actually smoke that many crappy cigars. Most likely going to sell them to you guys south of the boarder who cant easily come across good Cuban cigars. I dont smoke myself, but find it very funny every time I cross the boarder I get asked.......... " do you have any Cuban cigars in your vehicle ?" Maybe cigar importation is a bigger crime in the states than smuggling in guns or drugs.

He obviously had the intent to bring down the govt. It can't be done with acts of terror, but cigars...hahaha. Come on police, couldn't you have just seized the harmless cigars, slapped him with a fine and left him alone???

Re: Have a cigar? Be careful!

I don't mean to derail this thread, but I do have a question... If you carry tobacco with you onboard, how does it work (typically - I know I can check noonsite for specifics) when you clear into countries. I am a pipe smoker and a lot of the tobacco I smoke cannot be found in other places so my plan was to take all I need for our many year circumnav when we leave. But I'm weary of having to pay "duty" on pounds of tobacco every place we go. If you declare it as ship's stores do you typically avoid the taxes?

Can't help with the rules, but I found finding the loose tobacco in each country I visited part of the fun, and most had better tobacco that was also far cheaper than here.
Ymmv of course.

Re: Have a cigar? Be careful!

Target9000 - many Caribbean countries require even sailboats to fill out a ship's stores form listing the quantities of items, including alcohol and tobacco. That way they can check the amounts when clearing out if they suspect illegal sales. "Ship's stores" are items that won't leave the boat and are for consumption aboard and therefore aren't taxed.

Where you around during the days of "zero tolerance" policy of the USCG?

I think a Cigar (a΄ la Monica) played a key role when they tried to bring down the Government of Bill Clinton

Sorry… couldn’t resist
