Now that the kind that would really piss me off.

So I can either eat the costs entirely myself, or I can hope that the ~$1/day in ads on the site equals up to the hosting costs for the year.

There is no business model there to pay me back for my own time, let alone to turn a profit, but it would be nice if I wasn't blatantly out of pocket year in and year out especially as people come to rely upon in.

I pay my $20/year (that seems to be the magic number) for services that I use a lot: imgur.com, vpn, and a few others. That's how they keep the lights on, and I want the lights to stay on because I rely on the service.
Thats a bit different , that's not a crowd sourced site. This is. That's the value. I've no problem with Ads , I do have a problem with tiered revenue models in this case

Not being antagonistic, but what would you have them do? Shrink the ads, remove them, force everyone to pay money, or is just not appropriate for these guys to do more than break even?

I've been dealing with the Internet and user bases for over ten years and I've yet to arrive at a solid answer. Even big shops like facebook still struggle with it and try to strike a balance between being in the black and not alienating their users.

Exactly. Don't like seeing ads? Why don't you buy the forum, pay for it all with your own money, and eliminate the ads? Or you could just go away. Then you won't see the ads.

But as long as you're here using the forum, I think it's quite bad form to criticize those who are providing the very platform from which you criticize them!

That's part of what's funny about the $15/year outrage about this place. To anyone who's even near a boat $15 is nothing. It's a tube of caulking, a few fasteners, and less than a jug of diesel in a cheap country.

Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

I'm for paying a yearly subscription, if I do not see any ads. I never ever buy any products suggested by actors, sports figures or the likes. As for the ads on here, I "mentally out-focus" them.

Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

Focus guys, focus. I get a lot of ads due to all the free apps I download. Hardly ever see the ads. Here I get anchor ads. I will buy when I am ready, and the anchor I have chosen by logic and knowledge thank you very much. If ads keep the lights on, they are fine by me.

Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

I must be googling the wrong stuff; I get ads for boat stuff and gadgets, instead of what Doodles is seeing!

The only constructive thing I have to add is to recommend the "FlashFree" Flash blocker extension for Chrome. That, along with AdBlockPlus, keeps this site very readable.
