Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

As a techno dinasaur I have no add blocking or anything to stop adds that I know of. I dont get any adds between posts. There are adds across the top and sometimes along side, but they are very easy to put a mental block on. Remember we can still think for ourselves. If you let the peripheral clutter of life get to you, you have lost. ooooommmmm_____Grant.

Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

I turned off adblock, and what do I see? Utter misleading spam:
(that is funny, i turned it back on, now my post doesn't show the crap

Not to mention blinking ads. I avoid sites with blinking/flashing ads, without adblock that wouldn't leave many left...

Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

The value of this site is not only provided by the owners that invested in servers and bandwith, but mainly by the posters and moderators, who get no part in the revenue.

So I don't feel bad about using adblock.

The value of forums are SOLEY provided by the posters and owners of " forum software " would do well to remember that. Often they forget this and start assuming the site has intrinsic value , Internet is littered with abandoned forums.

Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

The only ad that bothers me has to do with anchors.. After years on this forum I am conditioned to become agitated at the first mention of any sort of ground tackle.

but also littered with folks who thought they were more important to a forum than they actually were .

I suspect CF is adopting my motto: "you can't keep all the punters happy all the time - so don't bother even trying ".

I'd go back to be a paying supporter if they'd fix the formatting to fit the page, as it used to do. The double F5 keystrokes fix it (Thanks again Rubyjean) but ya gotta do it each page. The format change occurred after I let my supporter status lapse. Coincidence?

Attention Janet: A personal and heartfelt thank you for reinstating your old avatar.

And while you're moderating, please change my ad preferences to what Doodles is receiving. Thanks again!!!

I agree the value of individual posters rises and falls , but the only value a forum has is the sum total of its contributors.

Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

Last I heard Cruisers Forum was privately owned by some guy named Andy in Brazil. He is obviously looking to put it on the block once he can demonstrate a revenue stream. Just move on to another startup forum that's still trying to please and isn't swamped with obnoxious Tea Bagger ads.

Re: Has The Cruisers Forum Sold Out?

For whatever it's worth, I've been trying to put together a passage database / online cruising guide (thekeel.com). Fortunately I'm a software developer myself, because if I was billing it's easily in the ~$50K price tag already, probably a bit higher. The hosting fees alone are in the several hundred a year.

So I can either eat the costs entirely myself, or I can hope that the ~$1/day in ads on the site equals up to the hosting costs for the year.

There is no business model there to pay me back for my own time, let alone to turn a profit, but it would be nice if I wasn't blatantly out of pocket year in and year out especially as people come to rely upon in.

I pay my $20/year (that seems to be the magic number) for services that I use a lot: imgur.com, vpn, and a few others. That's how they keep the lights on, and I want the lights to stay on because I rely on the service.
