Here's the Q,
We're flying to Grenada and sailing to Puerto Rico. Grenada wants proof of onward travel, would a one way ticket from PR to us be proof of onward travel?

It will help, but also you need a letter from the skipper telling you that you are crew, dates and where you are going. A photo copy of the rego papers and the grenadian clearence doc is good too.

Last time .i flew in it was late at night and they didnt ask.... But the people who often ask is your point of departure! So if you are flying from the USA it will be them you need to convince.

So gave all the docs.

You can write them an email and ask. Then use their response if any officer at the airport asks the wrong question.

We have a related problem. Our boat is in Grenada and we bought one way tickets from the US. We were told that we cannot board in the US unless we have a round trip ticket. Any suggestions?

Yes, show them the rgistration papers and your inwards clearence into Grenada. If you dont have that then you will suffer the extra airfare.

The really dont muck around on it. The cost of deportation is born by the airline that takes you down, so they will not let you on the plane with a one way ticket unless you have paperwork.

Some people get around the problem by buying a one-way, fully refundable return ticket in addition to the ticket for the flight down to the islands. Submit a request for a refund after you get there.

When we came to St Martin to buy theboat in 2008 we did not have boat papers as we hadnt bought it but had a letter from the broker saying were were buying the boat.

We were held up at Miami airport when we showed our two one way tickets and forced to pay 2 x $650 CASH for two extra tickets... This was American Airlines.

One ticket was refunded 6 months later and the other was refunded 9 months later. Of course, tax and admin costs were not refunded!


So do as you please!

We never had problems with Caribbean customs officials. Jet Blue, however, forced my wife to buy a return ticket even though she had with her all of the relevant paperwork from entering St. Lucia on our boat. The people at the ticket counter were simply unable to wrap their minds around the concept of flying in and sailing out.

Next time it happened my son was flying in to join me in the Bahamas. I found a $90 fare back to Ft. Lauderdale and just bought him that ticket. They did ask to see it and it worked - There is no need to buy a complete return ticket. All they care about is that you leave the country you are flying into. So, for ex. you could buy a ticket on LIAT to the next island up the chain and that would do the trick too.

Excellent hint/suggestion, haven't thought about this in the past!

Although from Europe very often round-trips are cheaper than one-ways! And if you cancel the return flight you will get at least taxes and fees back ...
