Firearm and Cruising

I would love to hear form someone who has cruised wth Firearms and can comment on how much of a hassel it really is.

The bulk of what is published seems to be based on intreprattion of the various national policies and not on actual experiance.

Thanks, K..

My experience, including extensive conversations with other seasoned cruisers, agrees completely with the advice from Jean Pockle, who has been cruising since 1986:

“... My attitude towards firearms aboard is a pretty firm "no!". See Watermelon's Web Page, http://www.cruiser.co.za/hostmelon.asp

There's a short article on Piracy in "General Bits and Pieces" (or you can go directly to it: www.cruiser.co.za/hostmelon2.asp

If you ask ten people thinking of going cruising, probably 5 would suggest carrying firearms. If you ask twenty cruisers already cruising, you might find one who carries firearms ...”

Google “Cruising with Firearms”

Flare guns! Do these require the same legal requirments as a firearm??
I see a flare gun advertised in a boat mag that can be converted with inserts, to fire bullets. It could easily be considered as just a flare gun.
Still wouldn't carry one. Just wondered.

The question has to be asked what do you want to do with a fire arm. Often people who say that they belive in firearms are some what lacking in knowlede and even more lacking in experience. The bottom line is are you prepared to use it?, Are you capable of useing it on a rolling boat,? Can you use if effectivley when you are faced with the althernative stuation of some young local kid (theft situation) or half a dozen guys fireing automatic wepons at you?. If you can not answer yes to all of these question then you are increasing your risks. Have you considered that in many places in the world the most desirable asset you have on you boat would be your fire arms. Put this with the advice from experienced cruiseres like GordyMay,

With Respect Paul

Question for Alan
Mate as a sailor are you more afraid of some thing that may, but doubtfuly put a hole in you, or a fire burning near your petrol tank?. If you were to change anyting on the flare gun it would be the speed that the flare burns at.
