One person died when an 18 ft. speedboat collided with a houseboat on Shuswap Lake (July 4, 2010). The 18' Campion can be seen, entirely within the houseboat.

I think it is time for a speed limit at night on the water.Navigation lights are for others to see you,boats going faster than 10 knots are driving blind.
I came very close to being rammed from astern while sailing years ago.My navigation lights were on but the power boat operator did not see me till the last minute.He apologized for the near miss ,but he was obviously very drunk.

A very unfortunate accident. Let's see what the investigation reveals before leaping to conclusions.

As usual, the knee-jerk reaction is for press/public to cry out for and the politicians to pass more laws rather than enforcing the ones we already have. Passing laws gets votes - enforcing the law loses votes. It appears to be addressing the problem without doing a darned thing. It's that simple.

I will admit, Rou-Coo, that I had jumped to conclusions. You are quite right to remind us not to judge before we know the facts. However, the following thought (voiced by Denis Delisle, regional director for the North Shuswap) had crossed my non-judgemental mind before I even read the article:

"He estimated that a boat would have had to be going at high speed to cause one to be embedded in the other."

I don't like the word accident for incidents like this. Driving a powerboat at night at high speed is not an accident. It's a choice. The homicidal driver chose to run his boat at night at those speeds on purpose. There is nothing accidental about it.

I feel for the gentleman in the houseboat who was killed. Tragic.

The nut case driving the boat should be prosecuted for man slaughter.

There may be an extremely remote chance that poor judgment was not the root cause of this incident.
