Extended tour in the EU, Med, Schengen for Yanks?

To be honest I don't think EU long term visas will be issued to facilitate cruising. I Beleive its a red herring and I've yet to meet first hand someone who availed of it for that purpose.

I'd either manage the Schengen issue according to the rules or quite frankly run under the radar overstays.

Remember two rules apply to everything in the EU

(A) the law of unintended consequences

(b) no good deed goes unpunished

Wouldn't they be the best ones to ask about VAT, while you are contacting them?

And did they say "study" means full-time enrollment in an accreditted university or institution? Or are private scholarly pursuits accepted as "Study" ?

Then if you ask for residency, and you are retired (not earning money working) what happens with the VAT of the boat. If you have a non VAT paid boat then will you be subject to pay the VAT?

I am no Italian tax expert .........but as my starting position, if I became a resident in Italy (or any other country) then I would assume that I would be subject to the same laws and taxes (including VAT and also that most countries tax you on worldwide income, whether remitted or not) as everyone else who lives there (locally born or not).......unless someone had proven to me otherwise (I would have my own cash bet on the outcome!) - and to start down that road will need a tax advisor.

basically the position for any country is that there comes a point when you are no longer a guest......at which point you become a full contributor ($$$) and don't get to choose yerself how much (little!) you put into the pot - you simply get to decide whether to or not (by becoming a resident or not).

In response to the later post, I doubt any Embassy (for any country) would be able to give tax advice!

they just replied my email very briefly saying 'unfortunately the longest stay in 180 days is 90 days. unless you go for study or work'.
And if you ask about VAT they just do not reply any email.

You forget, they are natives! They must have some acquaintance with the native tax system, and they certainly can speak of their own experience, even if they choose not to do so.
