documentation during gov't shutdown

2 questions here:
Can anyone tell me if those overpriced yacht documentation places can get my documentation renewed even though the coast guard documentation center is shut down?
And
Has anyone used local registration, specifically a US territory registration, instead of federal documentation when sailing South Pacific countries?
Thanks.

Re: documentation during gov't shutdown

#1 I seriously doubt it, but just an opinion.

#2, our last boat was CA state registered. We went through the South Pacific with her several times (Fr. Poly, Cooks, Tonga, Fiji, Kiribati, New Cal, Vanuatu, Marshalls, NZ, Oz, etc.). The CA registration card doesn't even have the boat's name, just owner, address, HIN, and state reg. number. Never once even got a question. When asked produced registration card, officials copied whatever they wanted to copy, gave it back. YMMV.

Current boat is documented, also never any issues, but I've spent more time with the document pointing out the information officials were seeking....

They can’t do anything better/faster than you can do it yourself.

Online renewal is still working.

Re: documentation during gov't shutdown

My USCG online renewal and payment was accepted about 10 days ago.

I requested my new document by email and have not seen it yet.

I am not expecting it until after shutdown.

Has anyone received a new registration from USCG documentation center?

I am traveling overseas and soon won't have a valid registration to submit when I change ports.

Re: documentation during gov't shutdown

Unfortunately, the CG Documentation is all managed by civilians and contractors, so they can't provide any service at this time. I had to solve an urgent issue and couldn't find any way to do it.

Private documentation services can't do anything as well - don't let anyone tell you otherwise... And anyway, you don't need them.

State registration is important and mandatory in most states, but especially for a cruiser, the USCG registration and documentation is critical - I wouldn't skip that.
