Do you pass up dead bodys and leave them stay?

i had a sailor tell me that he has saved a few people from the water,
he went on to say he also found dead bodies, and just kept going.
i found this disturbing, as i am sure family's would like to know for sure if a body was found.
so is this a normal practice?
does everyone just leave dead bodies in the water?
he said "they act like they saw nothing"

I doubt many of us have seen dead bodies in the water, and even fewer have not called the authorities if they did so.

I would not even think about hauling a dead body on board. Unless it was crew, then I think you would need to dump them ovbd again , unless you were just a couple of hours from shore.

I think it would sorta depend on where ya were when ya found the body ! If your close to a harbor maybe ya would bring a body into shore,(even in a bad state) but if your offshore, and days or weeks from a port then I would leave it there, and log the location and leave it be with a small sailors goodby. but thats just my 2 cents

You think so? There was a Panga off the cost of Mexico one night that sure looked like it had a dead body in it. Scared the crap out of us but what do you imagine doing?

if your anchorage or mooring field is near a popular suicide bridge, you will find floaters ...not infrequently. they can awaken you from sleep, as they scream on their way down to the water===try living near coronado jump bridge for a few years--we had over 20 in the time i lived there--dec, 1999-april, 2011.....even kayaked over one at 1030 pm one night after work-- we called water nazis and it took em 3 hours to dispo the problem. i refused to deal with it as i just finished a 4 day triage adventure in lost angeles and was exhausted--so a friend dealt with the police. was no big deal--they just take forever to arrive. i was dead asleep by the time the harbies arrived at the scene--man was dead a week.

scoobert--anywhere there is a popular bridge for jumpers, they will jump. someone will find the bodies.

Re: Do you pass up dead bodys and leave them stay?

i am talking more about offshore then off a bridge.
the logbook in my sailboat notes extensively of a rescue they made of a man that had been in the water for 18 hours, and lived.
i was initially shocked by this, but i would not bring a dead decaying body onto my yacht neither.
i was thinking i would maybe call the coast guard at least for a recovery...

if you find someone offshore it is on you as being there , to rescue the individual or have sar advised --while awaiting their arrival.

The closer you are to a harbor, the closer you are to authorities. I would stey there so they could find the body, but I wouldn't touch it. What if the person had been murdered? I just wouldn't touch a dead body anyway unless it was crew we had just found.

SAR in Mexico? Within vhf range to whom? No I don't think so, sadly. In regards to fishermen they are the most self sufficient guy's I can imagine. sometimes it does not work out.
