Do I need to re-Christen my newly purchased boat?

I am in the process of buying a US registered vessel, but I plan to remove it from the US registry and keep it under a state registration.

I will not be berthing it this season in the city it says on the boat.

Do I need to erase the location name?

Do I need to erase the US registered name of the vessel?

How easy is it to rename the boat? Do I just tell the dealer to erase the old name and paint on a new name when he makes up the papers, or is it going to be a big, hairy, multi-thousand dollar deal to change the name?

A boat that is USCG documented has an official name and hailing port and number. A state registered boat has a state registration number. If you remove the boat from documentation and then state register you can write whatever you want on the boat as long as you display the state registration number.

If you don't want to piss off Poseidon and every other angry god you'll have a well planned renaming ceremony.

Yeah, I've heard that and skipped it, but I went up a mountain in Iceland where you can make a special deal with the Norse gods. With them on my side I figure I'm okay.

Re the original question, I could cite Canadian regulations but that's not what the OP is looking for.

For a Documented recreational vessel the hailing port can be anything you want it to be. Vessel does not need to actually be based there.

Its an easy process to rename a Documented vessel.

However, name and hailing port must match whats on Documentation or officials may get upset. So, dont go erasing anything until you've actually changed paper work.

Visit NVDC for details:

State registration requirements vary by State. Where do you plan to register it?

Hailing port can't be "anything", it must be a US city or town.

If you cut a deal with Norse gods and expect that to cover Poseidon I got bad news: Poseidon is Greek.

No problem. Those guys have a BWT, a Bilateral Worship Treaty.

If the boat has AIS, I think the name is used in the registration of the boats MMSI #, I'm sure someone here can confirm or repute.

Re: Do I need to re-Christen my newly purchased boat?

My DPOs renamed the cat from a good catamaran name to a barnyard foul. No ceremony. Two years on the boat and nothing worked, two of the women were pregnant. I bought the boat, did the official gods appeasing (good party) and the problems and irritations subsided. Pure coincidence I am sure. Knock wood.

Personally I would remove any and all reference to the USA but I would do nothing to piss off the sea gods.

In think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. One of the Gods of the sea will curse you for changing a name.

A member of the "cloth" should be included in the renaming ceremony.
Now satisfying the Govts, that is a problem.

Re: Do I need to re-Christen my newly purchased boat?

With a state registration in Florida, you needn't display the name of the vessel or its base, but that might differ by state? The new name should be added to your MMSI number in their database. That can be done easily through the BoatUS website. And when you register the boat, give the new name to the state agency that handles boat registrations, and to your insurer, if applicable. That's about it; and remember, the next time someone tells you that it was unlucky to change the vessel's name, tell him it was ALSO an "old sea superstition" that women were bad luck on boats; and how crazy is that? I've been very lucky with women on boats

Re: Do I need to re-Christen my newly purchased boat?

Displaying a name is only required for USCG documented boats in all states. Undocumented boats don't need one.
