Customs Regs - Returning to USA

I will be returning to USA from Bahamas in 4-6 weeks. I have a current US Customs User decal. I have heard conflicting stories about checking back in to US. A few sources say that often a simple phone call from a few miles offshore will usually be all that is required - others say that's hooey, and one must absolutely physically appear before a customs agent. Surfing the US BP/Customs web is just a clickfest to nowhere.

Anyone with recent, actual experience? I am a US citizen on a US documented vessel. PS: What about immigration? I thought I didn't need to talk to them as I am not immigrating to US, I live there.

thanks

Unless the regs have changed in the last year or so a phone call is all that is required. This does assume that everyone on the boat is a US citizen, boat has been only to the Bahamas and perhaps a few other details.

Of course if you are hauling any sort of contraband you are required to report that to customs and appear in person.
