Cruising Japan-Does anybody do it?
Seems to me i never hear of anybody cruising the waters of Japan. Has anybody been? What are best finds? Locales? Would think would be cheap way to spend time visiting an expensive and interesting country.

Re: Cruising Japan-Does anybody do it?
About 15 yrs. ago, some Canadian friends of ours did this. They based themselves in Fukuoka. Two years ago, some Australian friends went there, stayed a while, then went on to Alaska with their two kids. So yes, people do go there, and from their tales, are quite well received.

Re: Cruising Japan-Does anybody do it?
Thanks Ann! Just seemed to me to be off the beaten track of most cruisers. Will have to schedule it as a destination for future!

Re: Cruising Japan-Does anybody do it?
Those I talked with spoke highly of hospitality and facilities. Not a place to sail to and from in any boat though.

Not to sail to and from in a boat in what sense? Please elaborate.

By 'any boat' I mean a boat that is not up to crossing turbulent waters / weather.
Japan is not a coconut milk run type of destination.

Re: Cruising Japan-Does anybody do it?
Biggest issue from my perspective is the need to bypass China (from Australia). Gaining permission to sail there is almost impossible, and even if granted it can be incredibly costly. In fact if it were as easy as most destinations this is one trip that would definitely be on the agenda.
I once requested the "free" raster maps available from the Chinese government and got the third degree about why I'd need them. They're quite paranoid about outsiders.

Re: Cruising Japan-Does anybody do it?
Australian friends who SAILED there went from the east coast of Australia via Guam, and from there, on to Japan. Had mellow sailing all the way. Vessel is a Beale 43.

I do not know about Australia but USA do not lag behind china too much in paranoia. there is company called "Vartech Systems Inc", and I send them e mail, enquiring about price for 17" all weather sun readable monitors, i thought to buy two for my boat and my brothers boat.
i got e mail from them that even KGB would not be ashamed. where i'm from, where i am living, for what I need them.

All weather monitors are extensively used in the military, hence the expected third degree treatment.

Well that's certainly an option if you really want to see Japan. The choices from there are fairly dismal though: either across the pond to US/Canada (tough trip I hear) or back to SE Asia/Australia again. I'd prefer to make some more stops on the way, which is why China's attitude to tourism is so annoying to me.

Lots of islands south of Japan, Taiwan for brief stop, Hong Kong then PI and Asia. Just pick the weather.

Re: Cruising Japan-Does anybody do it?
I met some folks passing through Okinawa one day. They had been living and working in Fukuoka for 11 years. Finally and reluctantly they left mainland Japan and headed south where I happened upon them at Kadena Air Base marina. I stayed intouch with them for a while as they cruised the Ryukyu islands that extend south almost to Taiwan. I lost track of them after a few years as they passed the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and then on to Thailand. These people had nothing but nice things to say about Japan.
Japan has a very big sailing community that welcomes guests as though they were family. You will find many marinas available with all kinds of marine repair and parts from international markets.
I live just south of Tokyo and about 18 km away from Yokohama marina. The people are very friendly and will do everything they can to help you in any way they can. It can be expensive or as cheap as 650 Yen (about $7.00) for a sushi meal. It is safe with very little crime. Transportation by train or bus is easy and available to everyone.
I highly recommend visiting in the spring during cherry blossom time or summer when you can climb Mt Fuji.
