Question clearing in to Belize

Does anyone know the latest rates for clearing in to Belize? Does it vary from port to port? Are there any hassles to be aware of?

Re: clearing in to Belize

Ask this question in the cruisers_network_online forum, as it is focused on the SW Caribbean, or the SW Caribbean Net if you have an SSB. A couple of years ago it varied from port to port and day to day and boat to boat. You also need to ask about the rates for checking out, as some boats were charged $10/day/person for being in the country.

Re: clearing in to Belize

Just checked our blog as I kept careful track of expenses. We were in Belize summer 2012. (Because so many folks seem confused about the charges I compared them to the Bahamas)

We paid $20 each for Immigration and Customs. Port Authority for cruising was $100 plus $2.50/ day for the maximum of 30 days. Added up that's $225 for the 30 days. Extensions are available. Having our cat was another $75. it would have been $25 less if we had gotten permission ahead of time (but suppose they had said no!). We do have a current health certificate for her from our vet in the states. When you compare this year's cruising permits with last year its more, but only because we pay for each country. You get all of the Bahamas for $350 for 90 days (no cat). Mexico and Belize charge to stay in any marine preserve. Belize is $5 a night. Haven't been yet so don't know how that will work. Supposedly someone will come out and collect. In the Bahamas it was $10 per night. Some places there was a box to put the money in; other places someone collected. I'm talking US dollars, not Belize, for those keeping score. ($1US=$2BZ)

When we left we cleared out an had to pay for the extension at the same rate of $2.50per person per day ($5 BZ). We checked in on Ambergis, out in Placencia.
Ambergis is easier because you can just walk there. Clearing out was more arduous but Ernesto was around and lots of boats were clearing out. Also you had to take a water taxi and then a car taxi to get to there. We always view the clearing in/clearing out process as "interactive theater".

We were there for 6 weeks - info at S/V WAHOO
