Question Clearing in and out of Marquesas

Hello,

In Spring 2006 I would like to sail from Mexico to the Marquesas and the Tuamotos. From there I plan to head North to Hawaii and then back home to the West coast of Canada.

I am confused when I read about the clearance procedures for the Marquesas.

Can I clear in to the area without going through Papeete? Or, do I have to detour to Papeete even though I don't plan on heading that way? My preference would be to simply hit a few places in the Marquesas and the Tuamotos and then head North directly from there.

Experienced advice would be apprecaited.
