Just a clarification:
I'm not looking to go "under the radar" or "on the sly", I was wondering if it was a LEGAL way to operate.
Thanks for all the replies, I reckon I'll hold off till I have a OUPV (working on that anyway).
Get your master's license along with your oupv. The test is almost identical, and you'll be able to run inspected vessels up to whatever tonnage. Being restricted to just uninspected can be a drag.

I'm studying for all the tests, but right now it is the sea days that are the show stopper. (almost have Grace ready to start sailing). After 360 I plan on getting the OUPV then upgrade to master as soon as I have the sea days for it(and the sailing endorsement goes without saying).
Whoever else may or may not care, your insurance company will care big time if you haven't told them you are chartering. If they don't know, they don't cover you. A customer's broken leg could take all your assets.
