Canadian buying canadian boat in Florida

I did hours of research but could not find how to do it.

I am buying a 35' sailboat from a fellow Canadian.
- No broker is in this transaction.
- The boat is registred in Canada and I will also register it in Canada.
- The boat is presently in Florida.
- I will move it out of Florida within 90 days.

Do I need a cruising permit? and how to get it since the boat is already in US water?
What about the 90 days sticker, I have read that it need to be obtained by the broker witch I do not have?

Anyone did the same type of transaction out there?

Sylvain

ps: I shall soon update my profile with a boat description....

The only thing that I would worry about is getting insurance then truck the boat out of there. sounds like there is a bunch of bull that you have to do, but as I recall when I bought my boat in new york I just worried about the insurance and getting it out of the states as quick as possible and back over the border and even then someone tried to rip me off with charging me some crazy amount for 2 pieces of paper that I just got online and filled it in myself. no word of a lie they wanted 500 bucks for this and all they were doing is downloading it and filling it in, total scam. so just be aware of people trying to make you pay for stuff you can do yourself or don't need limmer

My previous boat was documented Canadian. At the time I was a Canuck only. Today I have dual status. I asked Customs about my vessel being here in the US. I was told it could stay 1 year and then was subject to import duties. You could probably do state registration without a problem. Hope this helps.

I have done this. There is no real problem. Make the deal offshore apparent and bring it back to Canada. Have your bill of sale and upon entry you will have to pay GST and PST if it had not been paid. No duty if it had been paid or built in the US or Canada. You will only need a bill of sale that is witnessed to change the registration. The registration number stays with the boat. Costs I believe $175CAD.

Contact Transport Canada and see if this guy truly owns the boat.

You can check it online Just have the owners name and any registration numbers.

I had to do this to a person who left port without paying a substantial yard bill.

Done that, everything is ok.

I guess if I purchase from Canada to Canada without a broker in Florida, there is no trace of a transaction.

Then it is just a matter of getting a cruising permit.
