Hmm. There is an issue in the time you can layover in Turkey now. What you seem to be seeking with all due respect is a way of avoiding the tax from which you presumably receive benefits. You might be better consulting a tax avoidance specialist rather than yachtsmen. Otherwise man up.

Hi Chris Gee,
thank you too for your input.
and what do they say "assumption is the mother of all........s
you are assuming...
We are NOT trying to avoid tax at all. !!
we are simply trying to find where we can and cannot go in the Med on a NZ rego's boat, which WE will probably not bring back to NZ as we will be too damned old to do do BUT family might!! There !! that means our children can pay any due taxes.
We are a couple of old boaties trying to live the life and ensure we do the right thing- by almost everyone- mmm, why am I qualifying myself to you...its a girl thing.
the VAT thing is NOT what we are asking about- it is WHERE we can and cannot go, dependent on our nationality and the rego of the boat.
Please do come and have a drink with us if you see us in the Med.

cheers

Simple question. Where are you domiciled for tax purposes?

Hi DJ, this is not about tax, but we are based in NZ.
WHY do you ask?

I believe it has everything to do with tax. Your reluctance to disclose tax domicility speaks volumes. Why would you not disclose, unless tax avoidance is the aim.

I think a bit harsh on OP, especially given that not directly relevant (I beleive has already indicated that not a Tax Resident within an EU Country)......albeit in practice may well be helpful to be able to evidence that is Tax Resident elsewhere to support the claim that are not a Tax Resident within the EU - rather than being (happily ) non-resident anywhere (which is possible and legal)......as want to avoid a scenario where are 100% legal, but get sucked into a legal process to prove that is the case .

Might also simply not want to plaster his financial details over the Internet - this is not Facebook .

G'day, mates. Tax avoidance and tax evasion are two VERY different things. There is nothing illegal (or unmanly for that matter) by avoiding paying any amount NOT required by the appropriate jurisdiction. Cheers.

Re: Boat Regs ex UK or New Zealand

There is no point in paying a tax if you don't have to. If the question is where you can and cannot go in the med in a NZ registered boat the answer is you can go anywhere more or less. You would have to pay VAT after 18 months in the EEC, with it being uncertain as to how long you have to leave before starting a new period.
You can leave the boat in Turkey for the winter.
"ARTICLE 46. LEAVING YACHTS IN TURKISH MARINAS
Foreigners may leave their yachts in Turkey at a licensed yacht harbour or yacht docking area for the purpose of storage, maintenance or repair, for a period of 2 years, and may leave the country using any form of transportation they choose.
In such cases, arrangements should be made to take the documentation supplied by the yacht harbour (i.e. contract copy and letter of authorisation), to the relevant regional customs office.

Yacht owners may leave their yachts for longer periods, up to 5 years, provided that the yacht sails from the harbour at least once every 2 years. (R is not necessary to leave Turkish waters).
At the end of 5 years, the Ministry of Tourism has the right to extend the permitted duration of stay."
Some do this to avoid VAT.
A change about which I was unclear is that all nationalities now face new visa rules in Turkey namely one is granted for 90 days in any 180 day period.
That should allow ample scope to move fairly freely.
On my recollection your longer term plans and circumstances were not explicit.
Enjoy your cruise and yes I might take a drink as we have not had a summer here this year.

Re: Boat Regs ex UK or New Zealand

Just go for it, laws and rules change all the time but the yacht network can keep you up to date while you are doing it, without your getting clobbered by posters making unwarranted assumptions. I had the thought of buying overseas as well a few years ago but eventually decided to buy local, maybe make it up to the islands before age totally cramps our style, though there is a lot of cruising here in the North. Right choice / wrong choice, too late to worry now.

Re: Boat Regs ex UK or New Zealand

Hi, I think some people have misunderstood your question. You are not evading anything just quite sensibly trying to find out what you can and cannot legally do. We are dealing with similar issues as are a number of our Kiwi friends. Rod Heikell's site " Mediterraneo" has some useful information on the topic and is worth a look. Cheers John
