If you have not done anything yet, the boat is still USCG documented in the previous owner's name. You need to do something about this.

To de document a boat is a very simple form and process. If someone wishes to do this I would recommend to do it yourself and save hundreds of dollars for less than an hours worth of work.

In Rhode Island-

No sales tax ever if you physically moor dock.marina or,it's just there!
You register there also.
Many domicile new purchase yachts there for this reason-but vessel physically Must live there for this.
This not to say you can't sail it around the world either- you can!

Oh,and also you do NOT have to live there either !

Think Delaware has tax relief also.
