Australian Registration state?

Hi,
Just bought a yacht in the US and will be changing the registration over to Australia soon. Just wondering if there are different rules for different states with registration and if you need to have a residential address in that states for registration?

any one tackle this issue before?

Re: Australian Registration state?

State registration is diferent from Australian registration. You dont need state rego to have Australian registration. put whatever adress you like.

Re: Australian Registration state?

State rego is everywhere except the good ole Northern Territory, and it's forever on the agenda there. With it's small population base it would be a loosing proposition to admin, and police but they will eventually find a way. All other states have rego and the rules vary widely. There was an article in a yachting mag not so long ago showing it was impossible to circumnavigate [Aus] and comply with all regs, welcome to the nanny country. I believe you get a period of grace to register but not completely sure.

Re: Australian Registration state?

If you are sailing out of US then get Autralian Rego completed first. If you are short of time before leaving US with boat then at least get the Provisional rego. All forms needed are at this link:

Shipping Registration - Forms

Take care to get everything correct or there will be delays and extra courier costs. As Factor says, when you get back even it is a year or two's time, do the State rego then. If in Qld and the boat is over 50' then it has to be inspected early in the rego process, so you cant do it from US anyway.

You can arrive in Aust with a foreign registered boat (no Aust or australian state rego) owned by an Aussie and then register it here after you pay the GST and import duties.

Ok, but it needs to be registered somewhere whilst you are in transit -assuming you stop en route. An Aussie may not be able to retain the existing registration. eg only US citizens are entitled to have USCG documentation.

Re: Australian Registration state?

NSW will allow you 2 weeks grace to have your boat registered once you arrive in the state. As mentioned before the nanny country, it has been thrown around before that if your boat has Australian registration it would comply in any state, how easy would this be? but no, each state wants a slice of the pie so we jump through the hoops.

Well, state registration is tax collection while national registration is so we comply with IMO requirements (or some such).

Re: Australian Registration state?

Thanks for the replies. I will go ahead with the Australian rego and worry about the state stuff when I finally get her back home.
