Australian built boat

Any tax specialists out there? What is the tax situation in Oz for a boat built there and then exported? Got a potential buyer who may wish to return to Australia with the boat and doesn't want to be lumbered with import fees.

Re: Australian built boat

If no GST was paid during the build, and the boat was then exported, probably up for GST 10% and import duties, 5%.

Import duties also include the cost of delivery from the last port visited.

You also want the bottom cleaned and antifouled as late as possible before arrival.

Re: Australian built boat

GST was paid and not claimed back as it was a Vanuatu company, not Australian.

Re: Australian built boat

FWIW, our current boat was Aussie built, and was a registered ship. We had to de-register her, not being Aussie citizens, and she is now registered in Illinois in the USA. The first time we went offshore with her, Customs insisted on exporting her (this was later determined to be in error, but too late to do any good). When we returned, we had to import her. There was no duty nor GST due because of her origin, but there was a fee of <100$ involved (this in 2003). On subsequent trips offshore, we've simply cleared in and out like any other vessel.

I'm not sure if your situation is the same, but it sounds similar. I'd check directly with Customs (oops, I mean Border Force), since they are the folks the new owner would have to deal with.

Re: Australian built boat

On importing, customs will want to see GST has already been paid on the boat at some point in the past.
If you don't have it you will have to pay it. We have taken advise for returning with a foreign registered vessel, British, that has ten years previously been registered in Au.
Talk to customs and they will confirm this I am sure, we found them very helpful.
