Zinc condition

The attached is a gopro view of my prop and zincs. These were replaced 6 months ago. I think they look fine - comments?

What can I do about the growths on the prop, short of diving?

Re: Zinc condition

Hi, dmk,

The prop does need a wipe. I'm wondering if you've got too much zinc there. Where we are, there would be more wear in 6 months. Maybe the best thing is to consult with a diver there in Seattle, who is familiar with growth and de-zincification rates in your area.

From the picture, it looks like your boat is headed to the bottom.

Re: Zinc condition

I cleaned and my prop and shaft 1.5 years ago now and applied a whole can of Barnacle Buster to them (it's a standard fin keel with a long prop shaft). Just had the hull cleaned for the second time and the prop only had some growth on the edges where the Barnacle Buster has worn off (and because we haven't gone anywhere for a couple of months). There wasn't even any growth on the shaft or the prop that still had a coating. And the zincs aren't really wasting as there is very little metal exposed to the water.

A year and a half, really?
I do mine monthly, maybe every other month. Last and only time I dove the boat here in Brunswick there seems to be very little growth here, unlike Stuart where in six weeks I had hard growth.
What is barnacle buster? Do you think insulating the zincs from water contact is a good idea?

Really

the zincs aren't insulated, they are are on bare shaft

and there's penalty of growth here, you should have what came off the hull 2 days ago

OK, I see. I took that to mean very little zinc exposed, but you meant prop and shaft?

What is barnacle buster? I know of the acid based liquid, but of no other

While the two ZHC-2 hull anodes may not yet need replacing, your prop and shaft anodes are missing. You need to replace them and a diver is the only way to do that, short of hauling out. He/she can also clean your running gear. Do not cheap-out on this aspect of maintenance. It will come back to bite you in the ass.

Re: Zinc condition

Can also install a Saildrive leg/ running gear Corrosion monitoring and anode booster kit. PM me for details if interested.

I see a prop nut zinc . And likely engine is bonded to the zhc-2's thru the hull like my new to me boat.

It’s a spray on antifoul for props and shafts from Pettit

You see a prop nut meant to hold an anode. However there is no anode there.

Imho there is plenty of clearance for a shaft anode.

Re: Zinc condition

There is something aft of the nut that holds the prop on, and it looks like a conical shaped zinc to me, with a nut screwed onto the shaft holding the zinc on. Am I wrong?

You’re seeing a tapered bronze prop nut/cage with an Allen screw (cap screw) to hold the missing anode in place.
