Re: Wow! Look at the Legs on her! (NSFW)

She definately has bilge keels. Take a piece of paper and hold it parallel to the bottom of the keel and project it aft to the rudder. It never comes near the rudder. The other keel is in shadow and hard to see but if you import the photo and lighten it you should see it.

DOJ says it's not and he's seen it up close and personal but maybe he'll take a piece of paper with him tomorrow to be sure.

These legs are nothing new. In the 60s I sailed a 36ft canoe sterned cutter named Selina King which was fitted for legs from her life in UK.

True... the old fishing boats have been using them for hundreds of years in one form or another...

I will feel an idiot tomorrow if she does have bilge keels - but not nearly as much as the fella who attached the legs to her

CSI DOJ will get some evidence...........

Worry not DOJ...
What they can see is a bit of the little boat next doors bilge keel showing underneath...

Don't beat yourself up yet DOJ.
Was in Padstowe a few weeks back and saw a bilge keeler rolled down to W/L. One leg in the mud, and the other on something supportive.
Guess the chap put her back on a highish tide.

I think the black shape is simply shadow from the (single!) keel - but even I can't work out why that shadow is there , and I took the photo

One other thing that the photos don't show well is her draft - 5 (or 6?) foot.

If it is simply why the legs? - saves on haul out fees and storage charges ashore, half a dozen of those would pay for the legs..........obviously depends on area she is in

She is where she is because the boatyard is opposite, has electric and water available and simply is a good working spot .....I don't actually recognise her, probably lives in a Marina - certainly won't be living on her legs.........
I understand the legs. I don't get the three keels. Turning must be fun...

It's a High Tension 36. Mono Fin Keel.

Hapens twice a day in most harbours around the English Channal in France and England. Very common, look at the other boats. We had stock legs with our Beneteau, most usefull for winter lay-up in Holland.

Re: Wow! Look at the Legs on Her ! (NSFW)

Please please get a photo of the keel(S). I"m certain its a twin keel. I did import the photo and play with it. Difficult to tell but with the one visible keel offset to one side like that it has to be a twin. Its driving me nuts.

Ok, took me a little while - but hot off the presses

And yes, that starboard leg is 18 inches in the air .........as meant to be The boat weight has to be taken by the keel, unless the legs were the size of tree trunks and the boat had the hull to match the legs - and even then...........

The idea is that the legs literally prop the boat up right - obviously if the keel is on a firm surface and the leg in soft poop (it can happen) she will keel over. The "trick" is to know what will be under you, before arrival (and sea going away ). and of course with enough weight on the starboard side she will rock over - not recommended in case the leg buckles.
