Wooden Spreader - What Type Wood?

This is a dumb question but....I need to replace my wood spreaders but don't know what type of wood they are. I can't afford to have metal custom made. This is a 1973 Lindsey 39' Globemaster.

Open for suggestions and thanks to all

A stright grained wood like Spruce if you intend to keep them bright (Varnished) A strong wood like white oak is easier to find but will discolor in the sun and should be painted. Lots of good varieties out there that are suitable. Just be sure to get a clear piece (no knots) that is dry.

fjwiley1,
Be sure to penetrate epoxy the oak before painting this should prevent/minimize rot.
my 2 cents,
Erika

Oak is ok, but I'd try to get clear grained lighter wood for spreaders because of the extra weight aloft. Not a deal breaker but worth considering.
Sitka spruce would be best and you might be able to find some in an old wood mast or boom that someone wants to get out of their yard.
Kind regards,
JohnL

I rebuilt mine out of Stika Spruce, it is not cheap but that is what the masts are made of and the original spreaders were made of.

Mine have huge compressive strength, are light, relatively cheap and not affected by uv or by the weather too much. They also don't grow on trees!! Gotta love aluminium!

Epoxy does not work well with oak because of the tanic acid in the wood. Fir is strong and almost as light as spruce. The old clipper ships were almost completely built of fir, including their spars. Relatively inexpensive and easy to find.
