Wood that matches teak

I have a boat that has a lot of teak on it. Toe rail, hatches, hand rails, bow sprit. dorade boxes. I have been using cetol natural as a finish. This past week I have working on adding a stern perch, going to be a bench seat about 6 ft long and maybe 12 inches wide. If it were the perfect world I would go down to home depot and buy a 1x12x8 teak board. Not happening. I am not sure what to do. Use some other wood like oak? and try to stain to match? I have thought about maybe using 3/4 ply and then facing it with thin strips of teak. Any thoughts? Is there a wood that looks close to teak when finished?

I'm partial to white paint. Looks nice as a contrast to surrounding teak and is cooler to sit or stand on.

Re: Wood that matches teak

There are a number of different types of timber that are sold as "teak". I think you'll find the genuine teak is "Burmese Teak".

I used Nyatoh which is often called "Poor man's teak" but when Governments around the world banned imports (to stop the illegal felling of forests) I used a local timber called "Meranti" and you couldn't tell the difference.

Orion Jim is right mentioning Iroko but there are a lot of acceptable substitutes.

An Introduction To Wood Species, Part 10: Teak - Core77
https://www.core77.com/posts/.../An-Introduction-To-Wood-Species-Part-10-Teak
Sep 18, 2013 - Like many other popular imports, teak has several impostors. Its name is used to sell a number of other species such as 'Brazilian Teak' (Cumaru) and 'African Teak' (Afrormosia). Genuine teak, also called Burma Teak, consists of only one species: Tectona grandis.

There can be different shades of the same timber. It depends where the timber came from - center of the tree thru to near the bark.

Re: Wood that matches teak

Iroko is a common substitute, a lot cheaper and still a solid hard wood, as well as similar colour.

I've found that Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) looks very much like teak when finished with linseed oil. Very resistant to rot, but VERY hard and difficult to work.

If it's going to be exposed to rain and sun, Ipê is a great choice. It comes in many shades, so you should find some that has a colour similar to teak.

Take a look at Angelique. A famous boatbuilding yard on martha’s Vineyard used it on my vessel. Much to my satisfaction. And affordability.

Re: Wood that matches teak

A previous poster mentions local black locust: it is a viable alternative and should be reasonably priced as there is some use of it as flooring. Boy will it be heavy, as will teak or any other plank of dense hardwood. Find a piece of carbon fiber honeycomb and paint it. Or even spruce: it would be plenty strong

Re: Wood that matches teak

The only wood that looks like Teak is Teak. Find out which species, then buy enough for your project. Second, paint the
new project to match something. That's were the wifie shines. They come in handy once in a while.

Please notice that the poster is asking for a wood that looks close to teak. He is not looking for materials that he can use for his project.
