Wintering a Yacht - Checklist of Things To Do

Hi

We have been sailing our 46ft Beneteau in the Med for the summer. We plan to haul the boat out and winter her on a hard stand for the next six months. Does anyone have a checklist of items that should be attended to prior to our departure to ensure she is in the best condition possible when we return next year?

I am sure there are items that "newbies" like us would overlook, but would be obvious to more experienced skippers out there.

Since I have electric propulsion and winterizing the engine is now a fading memory I'll let others address that issue. I still need to winterize the water systems on board which I have been able to minimize over the years:

Needs and amount of anti freeze on your boat might be different depending on how big your water system is but, it works for me.

Also some way of keeping the batteries topped up over the winter is I good idea. I have solar panels that do that automatically. Though I'm sure the marina operator will be glad $$$ to do it for you too.

One problem with being on the hard is that it is more difficult to run things which have water intakes like engine, genset, AC units. These things don't like to sit unused so consider making arrangements to run them periodically.

Had a friend dry store a very systems intensive boat a few years ago and all these systems were very unhappy when he got back -- took a while to get them going again.
