Winch advice…..Barlow 15

Just finished servicing all of the winches on the boat……..except one.

It is a small Barlow 15 reefing winch. The other 15 has the normal allen wrench threaded bolt to remove the drum…….etc. The mystery 15 does not have this bolt or any other mechanical fastener to remove the drum. There is only a smooth black plastic disc that is spring loaded. When I press down on the disc it does not release the drum in any way. The disc cannot be removed and the top of the drum does not thread off in any way.

Bit of a mystery………

Any ideas out there??

Thanks……..

Re: Winch advice…..Barlow 15

Try lubricating the plunger, and gently hammering on it.

According to this, there’s a 3/16" allen screw.
Winch Service Manual for Barlow No. 15

According to this, there’s a retaining plunger.

Thanks Gord,

Those files are helpful. The plunger is operating but for some reason it will not release………??

Too much gunk and or over serviced with grease. Previous owner did not pay much attention to this I do believe.

I will keep at it……

Did you ever figure out how to dismantle the winch with the disc rather than an Allen screw?
