Willard Bowsprit: bungholes and rigging left

Thought I would bring a previous thread to a close (Hole in bowsprit). This was an unreal project. I learned alot about bolts and Dolphinite. And Epiphanes varnish. And wiring lights. The finished sprit has 11 thin coats of Epiphanes -- starting from 50% mix to 90% mix. One coat almost every day for 12 days. All that is left is to make the bungholes and let the rigger rig the foresail, staysail, and tighten the bobstay. The running lights are neat LEDs.

Well.... I did not build it (oops.... should have mentioned that!!). But I did mount and varnish it! I only dropped it once... and I managed to guide it down neatly on the foredeck before I went head over heels into the ocean off the bow!

Thanks for the laugh - I could only imagine that!

It's still a pretty piece of wood and you should be congratulated on picking it ;-)

A beautiful job no matter who did it. America's Funniest Home Videos would have given you a prize it only it had been captured on film.

No kidding! Good job.

Kind regards,

About the Willard 30 Cutter

Hi...

How do you like the Willard? Any drawbacks? What is great?

We are looking into a purchase and would like to hear any findings.

How does she sail? Could you share sail configurations with different wind strengths?

Th Bowsprit looks great!

Thanks!

Hello

You can write me or call me if you want to talk about Willard. I am not an experienced sailor, so I cannot answer questions as to how she sails. She sails. I have had her up 7.9 knots -- at least that is what the GPS said. I love my boat. It is my first sailboat, so I cannot answer what the drawbacks are.

MICHAEL, I have just purchased a 8 ton cutter in Portland, CT. It does not have the whisker stays on the bowsprit (you did beautiful work on yours) and I would like to add them to either side of the bowsprit. Would you be kind enough to tell me the dimensions of the plate around the tip and the length of the wires and how the chainplates are attached to the hull. Thanks so much. My email is sailor457@gmail.com.

I will drop you an email with my phone number, but upfront, I would say have a shipwright / yard look at the boat. I know of two other Willards here on the West Coast, and both have whisker stays. I find it very odd that you do not. have you checked in the approximate position to see if the whisker stay mount plate holes have been glassed over on the bow?

I will be back at the boat this weekend and can take some measurements, but if you are going to be starting from scratch, I suggest you have the job done for you. The issue I see is the cap. My cap was definately an add on -- it really does not make full contact with the tip of the sprit as I would like. While I was doing the sprit project my daughter was looking at the cap and noticed a some faint, reddish, hairline fractures on the bobstay weld and on the forestay tang weld. I had the cap re-welded, but I STILL regret not having the whole thing damn thing redone into a collar with the appropriate attachment points for the whisker stays, the bobstay, and the forestay.

Nonetheless, I will take some measurements from the point of attachement on the cap to the mounting plates on the side.

You are SO going to have to post photographs inside and out of ALL your systems!

Congratulations on the boat -- what made you decide to get this Willard?

Michael

PS: Do two owners make an association???

Willard 8 ton cutter

Michael, I added the whisker stays with very little trouble. I love the boat and have moved it from CT to VA. Nice trip through NY harbor made 10 knots at idle going through Hell's Gate and by the UN building. I need to clean or replace the fuel tank. I can replace the Racor in any kind of sea in about 8 minutes. If you have a Racor buy a $9 wrench to hold the plastic bottom of the Racor. John

So..... are you going to post some pictures of your boat? I am wondering how your keel bolts look and if your thru-hulls are grounded. And how is your anchoring system set???

Please, take some shots of your boat!
