Having been a Gas Conversion engineer in one of my previous lives I know how to do a good installation... and if your running rubber tubes near cotter pins...

Somone quoted the amount of smell that is produced befor it gets to critical explosion level and its quite smell... if remembered properly its nauseous....?

Many boats use propane or butagas, both of which are heavier than air and will tend to collect in the bilge. Depending on where you purchase the fuel, it may or may not be odorized, so you may not notice the leak even if you are breathing the gas. Most boats have automatic electric motors and electrical switches in or near the bilge, which can ignite the gas no matter what your horoscope says that day. So not using a cutoff valve seems quite risky
The situation on a boat doesn't compare to domestic gas used in onshore U.S homes, which is lighter than air, tends to dissipate, and always contains an odorant.

Nothing to do with a shut off but why didn't I think of this. This is just to strange to not pass on. My cousin was telling me how his son put jalapeno pepper powder in the paint that was used on the bottom of his 44 foot sailboat. Two years later when he pulled it put of the water for maintenance the bottom of the boat was clean. I don’t know what to say but it is inexpensive enough to try. I guess jalapeno pepper power in the paint is just to hot for stuff to grow on.

Just need to pass it on for those that think outside the box, what would it cost? I don't have any bad habits but I did have a concussion once and laying on the floor would not stop the spinning room, I would rather be seasick than have vertigo.

If you get the right timer....it will lock on in the full twist position. i've mostly used copper tube in my installations, but it does get brittle over time. A sailboat changes shape alot when subjected to waves, rig load etc. Anything rigid needs to stretch or compress as this occurs. For that reason , I like having a solenoid. Although on a small simple boat I might just go for shutting the tank valve!

My procedure doesn't rely on timers or solenoids.

Open main tank valve
light burner
cook
Close main tank valve
close stove valve

Rinse n repeat.

Ditto ...only way to do it.

Everyone has to have their own procedure. Just dont get distracted! Propane explosions occur regularly. Even the timer isnt failsafe....only takes a few minutes to cause problems.

She did exactly what I would do... smell propane, and the first thought I would have is, "Hey, lets use this lighter to see where that shut off valve is!".
