Which tools

I'm starting to plan my dedicated boat tool kit. I'm thinking,
2 sets of US wrenches.
2 US socket sets deep and short.
A couple ratchets and extensions.
Extensive set of Phillips and straight slot screw drivers.
Crescents, pliers, hammers, crow bars.
Wire pliers, solder set,
Extensive nut bolt, washer selection.

I have hand drills, and drill, bits.

This just dosent seem like it covers boat maintance. And extensive repairs.

Any thoughts.

Which tools

Lord where to start, first you have a US engine? If not, duplicate everything in metric.
Drill, files, strap wrenches, pipe wrenches, Dremel, hand saws, bolt cutter, axe, hack saw, punches, hammer, tap and die sets, US and metric, torque wrenches, impacts, both screwdriver and 1/2" socket. Multimeter, soldering iron, propane torch, every kind of electrical connection, extra wire, liquid electrical tape, anti seize, epoxy, fiberglass cloth, grease, vise grips, vise, clamps, file set, sureform file, rivet gun and rivets, 5200, 4200. Extra marine wire. O ring kit, crow bars,
More I'm sure, but that is a good start
Course what you need, you won't have, that is when you improvise.

Re: Which tools

Where's your list for woodworking, & glass work? Ditto on taps & dyes, plus tools for threading.
I don't have my list handy, but will try & find it later. Though a fair portion of it is more than just tools, as I look at some of the consumables used in repairs or construction as tools. Especially as some are hard to come by. Not sure if that's also vital to you?

Re: Which tools

I do not have full kits of anything as anything on our boat can be undone and put together with either 10, 13 or 16. So why carry a dedicated full kit? Unless your boat is very complex.

I found a drill machine very useful and now carry a lithion one that is my drill and ad hoc grinder / sander / *er. I sometimes think a lithion angle grinder would be nice too. Not that I need one but it makes some jobs so much faster. And you do not need a big inverter.

So in fewer words in a smaller and simpler boats you can carry fewer tools, half kits and concentrate on tools that are quality and multi-purpose.

Re: Which tools

This could get ugly. I was hoping to avoid an 80 pound tool box. Looks like I'll be pushing 100 lbs, at least. Clearly different chores, with multiple boxes.

Guys I'm on a 33.5 foot boat. Any suggestions as to best practices for tool storage. I'd like to keep it centered and low, perhaps the center bilge? No tool locker.

I've got a high impact parts bin on the way, for nuts bolts washers, cotter keys, circle pins, 46 drawers. I've been purchasing each by the 100 with spares in mind.

Vacuum, power tools, I had considered carrying a Honda 2000 generator, then talked myself out of it.

In all of your opinions should I reconsider,,and dedicate one of my 2000 w genies to the boat

Again thank you all for your input.

Re: Which tools

Dont put tools in the bilge. They are prone to rust anyway, and even in so called water-proof cases they are likely to rust. Talk to a mechanic that works on your brand of engine and start from there. He may tell you to buy things that you dont even understand, but often you can find a mechanic to do work, but if you dont have the correct tools and spares you are out of luck. It also depends on where you plan to cruise. Closer to civilization you need to keep far fewer tools handy. If you seek out the out of the way places, carry a much more complete set. Best of Luck. _____Grant.

Re: Which tools

Unless you already have the specific sizes of wrench, recommending a large slip-joint plier for prop nut and packing gland with rags to protect from gouging the equipment. That's gotta be another 5-6 lbs.

It's gonna be a workout

There is gold in the forum archives if one digs for TOOLS.

I suggest you also include a hacksaw and multiple blades.

Re: Which tools

A set of crescent, & pipe, wrenches, and vise grip pliers of various sizes including the needle nose set, allen wrenches. Hacksaw. Splash zone. Fluid film is a good lubricant anti rust for applying to the tools.

Re: Which tools

I like the blowmolded kits plastic doesn't rust, can see at a glance what's missing. I have a craftsman kit near 100 peices and a set of husky plyers and wrenches. (dykes, groove, joint, needle nose, Cresent and combination wrenches) thats my basic maintenence kits. Then I have my electrical box with dykes, strippers, multimeter lazer thermometer. Of course there also are hamers prybars and woodworking tools.
Hoe good the tools are is propotional to how much I use them. I bring better tools from home for bigger planned jobs. Stuff on boat gets rusty, stolen, lost overboard... so what stays on board is either high quallity and secured or medium quallity and expendable. The craftsman ratchet is good enough for any bolt on the boat. Its not as nice as Snap-On but if it goes over the side it doesn't take a day's or a week's wages with it.

Re: Which tools

How and where you use the boat will also make a big difference. I seldom cruise more than 100 miles from home my tow insurance will get me home if something major fails. Out on open water, long trips, or liveaboard without secure offboat storage and I would want a much different collection. I won't be doing an impromptu overhaul in a foreign port. I can afford the luxury of less tools and spares and only need spend serious money on a few special tools I won't use at home.
