Where can I buy used sailboat gear from wrecked boats in the US

I decommissioned my 36-foot ketch and have an Edson Steering system, complete with all parts. I also have other good equipment - anchors, rodes, winches, bronze turnbuckles and much more. I'm located in Los Angeles.

I know of two places in Rhode Island that have consignment shops and I have seen many parts for steering systems. Try The Ships Store in Melville, R.I. (part of p[ortsmouth) and Newport Nautical.

I decommissioned my 36-foot ketch and have a lot of good used gear, including an entire Edson 36 " wheel, quadrant, and all parts. I also have a 51/2" Danforth Constellation compass for this binnacle.

I reside in Connecticut and have searched my local areas of Ct, RI and a few spots in Mass without success. Will keep looking. If anyone has any knowledge of this area it would be appreciated.


In New England, the demographics are such that more folks seem to be exiting boating than entering it. At least in the cruising world. Each year the number of boats that are stowed in the section for abandoned boats, deceased owners etc., gets bigger and bigger. Our club just junked two 30 foot sailboats after the owners walked away years ago. The club scrapped the stainless and keel lead, and accessories. The rest went under the Sawzall with a final dumpster ride to a landfill or suitable spot. Sad as both boats could have kept on going. Could not even give them away. Could not make those steering systems work on my boat. Maybe there is some opportunity in the graveyard.
