What's the best hydraulic hose specification?

I have to replace my hydraulic hose again as its external cover is cracking only 2.5 years since it was last done. Far too soon in my view. Last time I replaced my hose the steel internal reinforcement rusted and the hoses burst (and the rubber was cracking from UV). I then got a hose with a thermoplastic cover over a kevlar reinforced internal layer of pressure hose, but whilst the hose hasn't burst yet the external layer is dramatically failing from UV or maybe ozone damage.

I suspect the specification is really not the best one. I need a hydraulic hose capable of withstanding the harsh Caribbean environment as well as kevlar lined for corrosion protection. I could cover it up with a fabric sheath I suppose.

Is there a good hose specification or make out there? Has anyone got any tips?

The thermoplastic hose that you're probably using is rated SAE100R7. There's an SAE100R18 hose that was originally designed for cold (freezer) operations, but has shown itself to be a better all around hose. UV is going to be your greatest challenge. I recommend that you use the ballistic nylon cover over the hose. It will shield from UV as well as wear.

Or SS braided hose, no rubber showing and ideally the better stuff's interior is teflon, not rubber.
Looks like this, often seen on high performance brakes and aircraft, should last a very long time

Common problem with heavy equipment. That is you you see the nylon sheath covering the hydraulic lines on excavators etc.
Lines start popping after a couple years. Sucks getting hosed down with hot hydraulic fluid!

+1

Contact your local Parker Store. No one knows more about hydraulics or has a better selection.

Re: What's the best hydraulic hose specification?

Dealing with hydraulics for a living hoses are recommended to last a year by most hose manufacturers even though they can last for decades without any problems.
Most low pressure hydraulic systems up to 3000psi will use single wire hose however two wire is much better even though it might seem like over kill. A good four wire hose is mostly used on high pressure hydraulic applications 5000psi. Aeroquip and Parker make flexible two wire hoses and for marine applications I would go with Stainless Steel fittings the hose wires are surrounded by rubber so don't worry about them. You can get covers for the hose. They help with abrasion and when a hose blows helps by keeping the oil mess less messy. Remember once the rubber has cracked it exposes your first wire braid which will rust out quickly and if you have a single wire hose...pop. Once the first wires go then the next rubber coating is exposed then the next wire braid and so forth.

I bound my hydraulic hoses (and other things) with grease impregnanted "denso" tape. Easy to remove and replace if necessary. No issues in several years.
