What type SS 300 for rudder post???

I would really appreciate any thots on what type / series of 300 stainlees steel (304, 316, etc.) would be the best choice to replace a solid rudder post? (Pomaika'i HAS to have a new rudder... too many tens of thousands of miles under her keel - on a boat that displaces 54,000 lbs.)

After having done a little reading, the technical and metallurgical stuff about corrosion stress fractures, etc. has gotten me more than a little confused.

Any education or advice from you guys will be great.

Thanks,

John K.

Have you looked at any of the Aquamet or Aqualoy shafts? I think they're far superior than any of the 300 series ss shafts.

Yeah! Aqualoy 22 for $haft$.
Really, that is good stuff if one can pay the little extra. The next thing is to find a piece that size without buying a whole length.

316 would be fine too. but not as strong and corrosion resistant. But for a rudder shaft strength is the most important!........................._/)
