What to do with an old sail?

I have a sail that is beyong repair. Since I hate to just throw stuff away I was wondering if some of you have ideas on what to do with all this canvas. Duflle bags? BBQ cover?

I have seen dingys covered with it. Looks really crappy if you are careful and then you get to keep your dingy longer, or so I hear from one cruiser. Boy did his dingy look crappy, till you lifted the facade.

A boutique used to sell fancy-pants bags using old sails for exorbitant prices. I'd cut it up and make some bags with heavy web handles and maybe some fabric paints for decoration. Give them away as gifts if nothing else!

A couple of years ago in Apalachicola, FL we met a sailor who who made bags (very strong) like those above mentioned using scrap sail, biminni and other canvas scraps,they were very nice looking and useful. He used different color combinations and sizes. He gave one to my wife it is one of her favorites. I think he had made over a thousand over the years and either gave them away or donated them for fundraisers.

If you don't already have one, and the material's not too bad, have it cut down to make a riding sail for anchoring out. The scraps can be recycled by your sail loft.
