what AIS should I buy please recommend

Dont know much about AIS.

Any of the Vesper Marine units. First class gear, first class customer support. Wide range of products. You can see many posts here on CF regarding these units and their manufacturers.

First question I will ask is where are you going and what do you want it to do. also what other equipment do you have on the boat like radar ect.

However, I have been impressed, too, with how responsive Jeff Robbins has been when we've had problems with our Vespermarine AIS. Having someone reputable standing behind a product, is really a good deal.

I second the Vesper. We have the touch screen one (Vision), and it's outstanding. It has the added benefit of being a stand-alone unit, not just an add-on to another piece of gear.

So, while you can network the Vision, if your plotter fails, it still works. When we're offshore, we typically shut off the plotter, and just leave on the Vesper.
