Waxing the Hull

I don't know if my knee is going to go along with waxing the hull this Spring. I would consider paying the yard to do it if the price wasn't going to be $800.

So I'm considering just using the wash-N-wax stuff. I don't expect this to be a great long lasting wax method, but I can redo it a couple of times a year pretty easy. I don't really care if it shines, just provide some gelcoat protection.

Anyone else using the wash-N-wax method? Does seem to be doing the job?

Re: Waxing the Hull

Come on people and confess up. I'm sure not everyone breaks out the buffer and some use the the wash/wax stuff.

The Once-a-Year Car Polish | Nu Finish - Nufinish

I've used this stuff for years, after I got the Gel-coat buffed.
You can wipe it on(a clean surface) ,let it haze & wipe it off a few minutes or days later.
It lasts a year up north-should last several months in tropics.
Try a bit on a vehicle first,if you like. The great feature is the easy wipe-off,without "arm wrestling". Cheers/Len

I'll second the nu-finish. While I don't actively wax and polish the chalk on the big boat, I use this several times a year on my beach cat. Primarily because it's fast and easy.

Nufinish is easy to wipe off. Best I've ever used by hand with no buffer.

Wipe on thin and wipes off by hand easily.

Re: Waxing the Hull

Some people have an unnatural affinity for buffing, polishing and waxing. As long as you put something on the gel to protect it, go sailing and stop wasting time and effort. Nobody cares how shiny your topsides are.

Re: Waxing the Hull

I like having shiny topsides. I hate how my fenders leave scuff marks on my shiny topsides! Has anybody found a good solution? I bought fender covers from WM which quickly disintegrated.

So what do you use?

The position I see myself maybe being is that I can not be going up/down the ladder to even hand rub something like Nu Finish on/off. That is why I ask about the wash-N-wax stuff that I can apply from below with mophead type of thing on a stick.

Re: Waxing the Hull

what you put into your hull you get out. There is no magic polish or wax. 3M make some excellent products that I like to use. Elbow grease is the key ingredient though...

Re: Waxing the Hull

I purchased the portable scaffoldings from Lowes so at least I can get a good run on the hull before having to step down and move them. I now have enough of them to go down the entire hull and the stern....REALLY makes a difference on the knees and cuts down on the time. Well worth the $$$. If you decide to do this, start with 3 of them...then you can get a-lot of work done on a sizeable area. As far as wax, 3M products...

Most tool rental stores rent nice rolling scaffolds for cheap. Usually they will also load them all on a truck and deliver to the boatyard, and pick up when done. Very cheap service. I often recommend this to clients, as yard scaffolding cannot be loaned out due to liability issues.

Not much. Our topsides are painted which only requires a periodic wash and annual wax. However, on previous boats with exposed gel, I used to polish and wax with a light weight buffer from the dinghy making all the climbing ladders or erecting a structure unnecessary.

As to what I use, collinite wax once a year in Florida.

Wal-Board Tools 3-1/4 in. x 9-1/4 in. Tuff-Lock Pole Sander-35-012 - The Home Depot

If you are able to stand/walk on ground,use a pole sander,with rags-maybe.

If not,& you are limited to hosing on/off "car wash" type "wash & wax"-I would check with local car washes,& use a concentrate-maybe.

Re: Waxing the Hull

If you must use a wash 'n wax, Mermaid with carnauba is good stuff.

Before applying wax, I lightly buff an anti oxidiser.. T-cut original colour restorer.....

Then

I use this stuff......
Gleams.. has the Carnauba in it.
