Water drained from bow deck // stop water ?

How is water normally drained from a bow deck on a mid-sized boat?

I have read that boats should have a "stop water" that prevents water in the bow from draining into the cockpit. What is that?

Re: Water drained from bow deck // stop water ?

The boat I am planning to get has a side deck that looks like it will just funnel water that comes over the bow into the cockpit.

Is there any way to modify this or add scuppers or something to decrease the water ingress into the cockpit in heavy seas?

As high as the bow is on that design, I think you'll only be dealing with mainly rain water unless you're in some real bad stuff

it needs an adequate fence or breakwater
then install scuppers from the deck overboard

might be a good idea to put scuppers in anyways

Uhh, I wouldn't be so sure about that. I'm not a naval architect (nor are you, I imagine, yet you are willing to state definitively what must be done to this boat ) but I'd want to know if the boat was already designed to shed water out the aft end, etc, and such a fence would just get in the way of the designed water flow.

Also I think if you are already planning major architectural changes to a boat you haven't bought yet, common sense suggests you should keep looking...

yeah hence the scuppers

nothing about this is major or even architecture, its just common sense not to allow water steaming across the decks into the cockpit when you dont have to

Scuppers, aka new holes in the topside of your hull. I'm surprised this doesn't go without saying, but to the OP, I think that's a pretty silly thing to do to your brand new boat. And Zulu, you don't know anything about that forward deck's height relative to the waterline so your scuppers could be doing a lot more harm then good with respect to letting water on board.

ON EDIT: Whoops, I thought from the one picture I saw that it was a walk-around deck, bow + stern. The fact that it's not, that in fact the fwd deck is about the height of the hull freeboard, makes Zulu's idea more palatable, but I still think it's silly to go rearchitecting a boat you haven't bought yet.

One little picture of part of the boat does not allow us to make any useful pronouncements about what the boat does or does not need.

Looks to me like a glorified center console design. If that's the case, it's working as intended.

It's a Sargo 36. Any water that comes over the bow will drain out the gate at the stern.

well thats probably fair
but I think its a pilothouse kind of boat, not insubstantial like a centre console

It looks like a new boat, why not discuss it with the builder.

Re: Water drained from bow deck // stop water ?

This is the same model boat. As I said the water goes out the gate on the stern.

Re: Water drained from bow deck // stop water ?

There are scuppers midship but in the case of a major wave over the bow that gate on the stern is what you want.
