Transporting a Mast Across Town

So.... I have my mast at the boat yard (off of the boat already). I have done all of the work I can do, removing what I can.

At this point, I need to get it across town to the bigger machine shop. Mast length is 35 feet. No sleeve, one piece. Suggestions?

U-haul is about the best I can come up with and am open to suggestions.

Rent a long bed pick up truck and put it on top? Or rent a 15 foot trailer and do some weird support system? Just really frustrated at this point.

Stand on the side of the road until a eighteen wheeler with a flat bed rolls by. Chase him down and say "Hey buddy...want to make a quick hundred bucks"?

...or maybe go to a truck stop and tell them you need an empty flat bed to make a quick trip accross town for you.

Ask the shop how to move it.
Or, rent a trailer. Build a rack, an A-frame of sort (2x4s, 1x2s), support it so most of the overhang is over the vehicle. X-brace between frames. 5' o.h over the back.

Yeah +1 for finding a bored flatbed driver. Post it on craigslist and see what your response is.

Famous last words, but it shouldn't be too expensive

We moved ours with a 1991 chevy 2500 suburban strapped to the top with at lead and follow car. Our mast was 40 ft Long but we never went faster then 20 mph.

Cheers and good luck,
Jon

I used a borrowed boat trailer to move my 55' mast about 100 miles. Piece of cake

Re: transporting a mast across town

I am leaning towards the boat trailer, and there is a guy in town that rents them out for the day (I don't have one...)

At the same time, a flat trailer with some braces may work.

Liking the boat trailer though....

Run over to Kaneohe YC, where they have a hoist to put in boats in the 24-30 ft range, and see what new friends you can make in the bar. Lash the mast so that the front end is above your vehicle, and the back end sticks out 3 ft from the trailer.

Re: transporting a mast across town

I hit up Ala Wai YC and didn't have any takers (my boat is at Ko'Olina). Kaneohe YC is a little farther away.

But a 6 pack or a case (or maybe a whole keg) will go a long way.....

Boat trailer it is!

Better than these famous last words, "Hold my beer and watch this!"

Flatbed sounds best.

Re: Transporting a Mast Across Town

I have hauled my a few times on the ladder rack on my truck. By putting it up on edge, it was plenty stiff and I just drove carefully. My uncle had to haul a bunch of large masts and they ended up using a crew shell trailer, they are made for 60'+ crew shells.
