Transparent Sailboat

There is a musician who lives near me and would like one of these Clear Canoe - See Through Canoe in the form of a thirty foot sail boat. Any conjectures about feasibility, durability or advisability?

Re: transparent sailboat

Polycarbonate would have to be really thick to be strong enough for a 30 foot boat- possible, but not very practical and very expensive. Plus it would tend to crack and glaze like hatches and portlights. Not aware of any other clear materials that would work better.

If you watch Star Trek closely they disclose the molecule for transparent aluminium.

You'll probably see an increase amount of scuba diving activity under your boat and they arn't looking for burried treasure.

Unless see-through antifoul is also used the whole concept is doomed to fail. More sensible is an idea I saw on a Spray design a while ago. It was a large circular glass pane mounted to the bottom of the hull. On the inside, the window was enclosed within watertight bulkheads that extended above the nominal waterline. The bulkheads also acted as a light curtain to allowing easier viewing of the liquid world below from above.

...Unless, of course, the skipper is a 250 pound, middle aged+ male who sails alone!

Yuk- the most humane thing he could do is draw some curtains. However, if it was the local female basketball team on a charter..............

This boat:

Sub Sea Tours | Whale Watching California | Kayaking in Morro Bay | Ash Scattering Central CaliforniaWhale Watching California | Kayaking in Morro Bay | Ash Scattering Central California

has 2 foot by 6 foot windows that are underwater.

Kevin cleans them every week or two using a scrubber
that actually polishes the plastic. They are remarkably
clear after more than a decade in the water.

would probably fail as a living aboard boat.

the kayaks look like fun, and i would love to see a row boat with a see thru bottom. would be fun to watch fishies as ye row to shore....or fish for dinner...lol

Re: Transparent Sailboat

The outside of a boat would look nicer than seeing all its interior structure, cabinetry, wires, engine and plumbing. Don't we try to hide wires?

It would depend on how much junk was aboard to actually be "see thru".

Did you know there is transparent aluminum and it is used as bullet proof windows? Thing is the way it is made the largest pieces are only 30"x30" in size and they cost an arm and a leg. Have no idea how the salt water would effect it.
