Tohatsu 2.5 impeller changing

Hi sailors!

Does anyone have an experience of changing the impeller on the Tohatsu 2.5 or a similar engine? I don't find any free service manuals (would buy one, but no point if just to change the impeller.....)

My question is: how to correctly remove the gearbox? Just unscrew the two bolts and carefully remove it? or there is some pin/nut/bolt inside I have to remove too? I've removed 2 bolts but it looks like something else hold the gearbox. Don't want to mess with ))))))

Thanks for help

Re: Tohatsu 2.5 impeller changing

Hi again, managed to remove the gearbox, had to remove a side rubber plug on the shaft and undo a bolt holding the shaft.

Now, as I have checked the impeller, it looks fine, however, the water is not pumped as it should be. Even on a full throttle, water is just dripping out and not flowing.

I have no idea what could I do first, the last thing I would do is remove the shaft and check all the water-cooling system, but...welcome the nightmare!

Any idea or helpful advice? Thanks

Re: Tohatsu 2.5 impeller changing

a piece of nylon line used for a weed eater run up the tell tale water tube is a good place to start. Sometimes little sea creatures make it through the cooling system and get wedged in the tell tale tube.

Re: Tohatsu 2.5 impeller changing

Last year, my outboard mechanics (the man who sold me a 2.2hp 2-stroke water-cooled Suzuki, very similar to a 2.5hp Tohatsu) strongly suggested that after 7 year of use, I remove the engine head, to clean the accumulated salt. His reasoning is that when running the engine in fresh water, one never waits long enough for it to warm up and dissolve the salt.

He was very right: the cooling channels were partially clogged with salt and some sand. After a good cleaning, the water flow is much stronger.

If you do the same, it will only cost you the replacement of the engine gaskets.
