Does that mean the hinge is mounted on the face of the cabinet, above the bottom of the trash can a few inches? I like the idea of hinging it so it is naturally closed. I had been planning to mount the hinges inboard, but that may be in error if gravity won't keep it closed.

Zach, nope, the hinge is at the bottom of the panel. The weight of the box and any rubbish keeps the door shut quite reliably. i should point out that the hinge and door run athwartships, so that rolling isn't a factor, and that it faces aft so that pounding to windward tends to close rather that open the door.

Our bin is located in the aft end of the engine box which is also a galley bench. The only time the barrel bolt needs to be secured is when I open the engine box by tilting it up and aft to access the engine. I occasionally forget to do this, and the result is dumping the contents of the bin on the cabin sole and having a mess to clean up! Maybe the bungy cord idea would be better for this forgetful old fart!

I've just built something similar that closes with the weight of the stainless rectangle that the trash bag hangs on at the top of the door.
the door is hinged along the bottom.

then by adding a protruding teak baton at the base of the door, allows it to be hands free as pushing down on the batton with your foot opens it outwards.

-press door, catch releases, door falls open with weight of removable garbage box.
chain holds in place. Close door and latch holds securely until door pressed again.
Make box big as you like
