Thru-Hulls: install before or after barrier coat?

The hull is now dry below the waterline and is about ready to be barrier coated before paint. However, I am confused as to when to install the thru-hulls. I've seen some boats in the yard install them first, then barrier coat (coating over the thru hulls as well). I've also seen some install them after coating and just painting over the thru hulls.

What say ye' on the order of operations here?

I don't think uber critical, but I would go for barrier coat first simply to remove the risk (?!) of failure of the barrier coat at the seam / join / butt to the thru hull.

5200 stick better to any epoxy coating than in antifouling, i install always thru hulls after the epoxy is set , right now im installing a couple of cockpit drain thru hulls after putting the last coat of interprotect 2000e , later epoxy primer thru hulls and done, finish with antifouling.

Thinking a bit more - if the thruhulls were already fitted I likely would not bother removing them though.

Re: Thru-Hulls: install before or after barrier coat?

Well if you barrier coat with the thru hulls in place and you got a future problem with 1 or 2 or you need to remove a stuck valve and in the process the thru hull shift a bit most likely the barrier coat at the joint break leaving a crack in the coating , i guess...
