There's this thing attached to the overhead above the galley counter top. Anybody know what it is?

Only if the blades were 3" long (note post to the right), and it didn't need electricity. :-) Also, no crewmembers over 5'4".

Very possible. It is a 1983 Slocum 43, and that was during the disco era. Do you know where I can a replacement?

Is there a hook in the bell? That would be my next guess for a oil lamp as Steve Bean mentioned. Keep heat directly off the ceiling and prevent the soot stains. The bell looks black already...

No, no hook. The bell-like doohickey is like very hard rubber or soft plastic. There's a bolt that goes through it and into the metal plate on the wood base. The bell-like thing is loose on the bolt; kind of like an upside down shade holder on a ceiling light. The bolt screws in and out, but it won't come all the way out.

Whatever it is someone took a great deal of effort to make a nice mount for it. It is a puzzlement for me.
